It's hard to say just from reading your question and not actually speaking to you in person. Yes, the professional attire and firm hand shake helps a little but mostly employers are looking for people who are qualified for the job, have good communication skills, and sell themselves with confidence.

I would highly recommend going to the career center of your local community college and asking to do a mock interview. They can help you with your resume and cover letter, give you interview tips, and all sorts of other advice to help you find a job. I did one once where they filmed me during the interview and then played back the tape so I could see myself. I was really nervous being in front of the camera but it really helped to see how my body language and the way I spoke reflected my nervousness and lack of confidence about my skills. I had been a "runner up" for many positions before, but now I have a great job!

You are not seen as the best candidate.

Furthermore:

You may be applying for the wrong job (i.e. jobs that don't match your skill sets).

You may lack a degree/formal training.

You may lack applicable work experience.

You may be demanding too much (i.e. big salary, extra time off, working a certain shift, etc.)

(Sad but sometimes true) Are you pregnant?

(Sad but sometimes true) Are are a minority?

(Sad but sometimes true) Are you too young/old?

Do you act like you want the job more than everyone else they interview?

Moreover, eye contact and a firm handshake doesn't mean you'll get the job. If that was the case, everyone would have whatever job they wanted. It's all about the message you are trying to convey. Think like you are selling yourself. Highlight your accomplishments and how they will benefit the employer.

Sometimes we fall into these slumps...I learned in high school and college proper interview techniques and still can't find anything. (I think it is bc my baby bump) But just in case it is not just a strand of bad luck here is some advice. Make sure your hair is not in your face and is not in an outrageous hairdo or color. Not too much make up. Not too much perfume. Professional dress. Not too much jewelry. No visible piercings or tatoos. If you smoke do not smoke before an interview. No gumming chewing but make sure your breath is fresh before you go in there. Do not offer your hand first in a handshake let them offer there hand first. Do not sit down unless told to do so. Make eye contact but don't be too intense/scary looking. Answer questions in complete sentences. For example if they why do you want to work for out company say I would like to work for your company because....Along with that practice answering questions that could potiently be asked. When they ask if you have any questions always think of atleast 2 questions such as what would my hours be or is there room for advancement. Also if they asks for weaknesses make sure its a positive weakness like im a perfectionist or i ask a lot of questions. Then as you leave YOU offer them your hand and thank you for your time and it was nice meeting you.

Well the fact that you're getting to these interviews is the sign that you're doing something right.

Can you elaborate a bit more on what you're doing in an interview? Maybe you're being too nervous, or were unprepared for the questions.

Interviews aren't just about firm handshakes and looking good. There's much more than that.

It's really about interviewing you and what you can do for the company, and vice versa..

You seem to be doing all the right moves so lets

zero in on what you are not doing. Lets not go so

heavy on the eye contact it makes some people

nervous to be stared at all the time , Maybe not

quite so "proffessional " in your dress. a little

ruffle on the collar of white blouse. Soften the

make up a little not hard eyed business type.

In other words lighten up and be human. Dont be

afraid to admit you have made mistakes .

Lots of luck Hey you can do it.

It must be your personality or your qualifications. You have to be confident, but not too confident. You have to be outgoing. You have to have the right answers, but they can't sound rehersed. Most interviews are the same and you always get the same answer. The interviewer wants a unique, sincere answer to the same old question.
