I've always been bothered by sitcoms jokes that go way over my head. Then when I don't understand them I feel dumb, because the audience is obviously laughing at something I failed to get.
In an episode of married with children Al Bundy is in his shoe store trying to get an overweight woman into a pair of shoes. This is the dialogue.
Woman : I don't understand. Before aerobics, I used to fit in a size 6. I guess all that jumping expanded my feet.
Al: I see you've must've fallen on your butt a time or two. Woman: How dare you say that to my face!
Al: Well, I'd say it behind your back, but my car's only got a half tank of gas!
What does Al bundy means when he says he;d say behind her back but his car's only got half a tank of gas. Does that joke have a meaning, or is that a random comment? I don't get it. Does anyone?

He's meaning that she's so huge that it'll take more than half a tank of gas to drive around her to say it behind her back.

It means that she's so fat it takes more then half of a tank of gas to go around her.

He has a late model Dodge so the gas mileage is poor, he is also poor, and cant put in a lot of gas. Also driving fast burns more gas and that is what he was notorious for, driving fast.
