There's a good chance you need new plugs installed and an oil change. When it's cold, with old plugs, there just isn't enough spark to ignite the fuel/air mixture. What happens is that people just keep cranking the engine and in fuel injected motors this causes fuel to be forced into the crankcase (where the oil is). There's a strong smell of gas as you describe when this takes place. This is a pretty common thing in cold weather. (fuel injected autos with bad plugs not starting well and their owners cranking and cranking, forcing fuel into the crankcase) If the engine does start, now with a lot of fuel in the oil, it runs very poorly. Pull your oil dipstick out and if it looks frothy or milky and smells like gas this is one of your problems. It may also show well over "full". You didn't mentioin the mileage on your car, or how recent it's had plugs/tune-up. Check your oil ASAP as running it diluted with fuel can be a very bad thing. If this is the problem it's a pretty simple fix. New plugs, oil filter and oil change should solve it.

If it smells like gas, it isn't so much your fuel pump or filter because it's definately getting gas. Nick makes a good point. Replace your spark plugs and change your oil if it is saturated with gas. I'd also recommend installing new plug wires. They may be as old as your car and also part of the problem. Old plug wires may be leaking energy (causing a weak spark), especially if any oil has leaked onto them. If you don't find the cause of your starting problem right away, don't be afraid to push down on the gas as you crank it on your second attempt. If it's it's flooding that will help it start (more air helps dry out the cylinders).

rig the battery up and get some bounce leads from a friends motor vehicle to yours, tell them to start the engine on a similar time as the bounce leads are rigged up on your motor vehicle. go away it for a jiffy because of the fact there will be extra fee getting in on your battery because of the fact the alternator is putting potential into his battery to fee it then the potential would be getting in on your battery. once you have achieved this turn the engine off and initiate yours up. it may pass after that because of the fact there is extra fee interior the battery and plus its nonetheless related up on your friends so it particularly is going to likely be initiating off his battery aswel. as quickly as its going take the bounce leads off then the battery could fee by your alternator. O and it could have been a multi-meter what he used 2 examine your battery. in the journey that your battery cant carry fee maybe your alternator is on its way out. get a multi meter examine the voltage of the battery then crank the engine over and the analyzing could pass down a splash then pass as much as approximately 14 volts if the anternator is working advantageous.

Since it also had a cooling prob, sounds to me like a head gasket will be needed.

How many miles it got on it?

The fuel pump may also be out, or there may be a leak. Fuel filter may be clogged.
