In the major leagues, he played for the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, and Boston Braves (now the Atlanta Braves). He started out with the Baltimore Orioles, who at the time were a minor league team, before they traded him to the Red Sox. So, he played for 3 MLB teams and 4 teams in organized baseball. (He also played on a number of exhibition and barnstorming teams during the off-season that only loosely fit into the definition of "professional baseball".)

3 teams: The Boston Red Sox, the New York Yankees, and the Boston Braves (who later were the Milwaukee Braves and Atlanta Braves). It is serendipitous that the person who broke his career home run record (Henry Aaron) did so for the same franchise with whom he hit his final home runs.
