Should I try and offer it something so that it will stay still long enough to find out what kind of snake it is?

like most one eyes snakes
you can only tel by giving it a good shaking, it likes to be shaken
and then and only then you will know what kind your dealing with
and then more than likely it will get upset from the shaking and throw up
and again at this time you will know how tough this particular snake is
some just roll over and play dead, and some still have plenty of fight in them
so go ahead shake it all up so you can classify it

You need to capture it in a rubber package. The answer will come to you.

You can tell by examining the skin, or lack of, around it's head.

rub it and pet it and then get a good look at it
