because tybalt was insulting romeo and romeo was too in love with juliet to fight back- then he called tybaly his "sweet cousin" mercutio had to fight tybalt because romeo wouln't then romeo tried to stop the two fighting and stood between them, then tybalt used romeo as a shield and stabbed mercutio- and it killed him

Benvolio and Mercutio (both Montagues) meet Tybalt (Capulet). Tybalt attempts to provoke Romeo into fighting. Romeo tries to stay cool. Mercutio fights Tybalt and is killed. Romeo then kills Tybalt. in anger. Escalus, the Prince of Verona banishes Romeo from Verona threatening death should he ever return. Juliet learns of Romeo killing Tybalt and despite being torn between her loyalty for her family and Romeo, mourns her husband Romeo's banishment.
