I am not looking for a great job. I have access to a cheap power painter that I think is typically used for painting houses. I only paid 300 for the truck and would like to keep this cheap. Please dont post that i should take it to a pro(cause I wont). I have spray painted a primer on already.

Thanks for all replies.

I have not done it myself, but I would try it. Maybe get the paint from a body shop. You might can save some money by just picking a light or dark color on the paint..... (instead of a "color chip" color, tell the guy to mix up leftover paint.

I once knew a guy that painted an old van with a roller, you know, like you would use on walls. It was far from perfect, but considering what it cost him.... It didn't look half bad.

If you want a lumpy "orange peel" effect, go ahead on. A professional gun breaks the paint to a fine mist that is applied to the surface at a steady rate of pressure. Basically, this allows the paint to "flow" and creates a smooth finish. This is only part of the equation, there is a lot more to it, such as temperature, solvents, paint, etc. None of which is achieved with a Wagner house painting rig. Please say you'll take it to Maaco. For about $100-$150 you'll get a paint job that looks halfway decent and will last 2-3 years at least if you take care of it. Hell, it'd cost you that much just to buy the right paints, hardeners, solvents, etc.

Make sure you sand the primer coat with 320 to 400 grit...if you use a wagner, you'll have to use the .015" tip, and mixing the finish coat with the proper additive is necessary.

Yes, it can be done, but a cheap air paint gun and compressor is better...be careful, and pay attention to details, and you can get a pretty good finish.

...it will work but you've got to mix your paint a bit diff... and make sure you've tape'd up everything... The power sprayer will put out a wider and less detailed mist then an auto head...
Then too... in the tight places... get a real small roller...
