Hello, I'm a New Yorker and I really hope to someday travel to anywhere in the U.K.. It'd be pretty great if I've made a few friends there, but I've heard plenty of stories that the English tend to not like Americans. Why?

We have xenophobia here. It's not that we don't like American's. We don't perhaps like brash and loud, warmongering, souvenier bag carrying, usa flag t-shirt wearing, big NY baseball cap wearing, Americans. (maybe)

In the UK the stereotypical American is loud, brash and obnoxious and supremely confident of Americas superiority to any other country on earth. However after spending a year living in America and getting to know many Americans on-line I know this isn't the case for everyone.

My advice, to anyone going to another country really, would be to be polite and respectful towards their culture (not that we have much of it in Britain) and otherwise just treat people as you would at home.

Of course some people in the UK just don't like anyone from other countries, which is unfortunate but there doesn't seem to be much we can do about it.

Oh and be prepared to lose some illusions about European life and culture. ;)

I think the English are just jealous and miss the old days of the empire. The Scottish and the Irish love the Americans so go there first. The scenery is better too, as is the ale!

God Bless America.

Don't believe all you here. My sister met an American she fell in love with him married and went to America to stay.
After that she had two wee boys and came back and settled in England. Her husband and she like England better than Scotland.
I live in Scotland and have a lot of English neighbours.

I am American in NYC. I don't think anyone really likes us. We are perceived as being either arrogant bullies or stupid, fat slobs. People just like to hate us. I don't think the British are unique in this regard. Since 9/11, I feel most of the world despises us.

Sweeping generalisation! My best friend in UK is American, we really like each other. I visit Florida often, and love it. Come over and make friends with us!
