Why are facebook and myspace the biggest social networking sites there are when there are so many other ones that are even better but nobody has ever heard of them?

Why was the million dollar homepage such a success? How did the guy get attention?

I'm sure that the most successful sites didn't put all their marketing energy on search engine optimization! That's just something fairly successful sites do!

Come on guys, answer this one for moi.

Good word of mouth marketing? These kinds of webpages require you to have friends on them for you to want to come back. The only reason I ever even heard about these websites was through friends...who also had lots of other friends registered. Maybe they had a bigger budget to do some grassroots campaigning? Or, they started out with outgoing people who had large networks to begin with?

:) just think how this answers.yahoo got so popular.. there were so many forums and groups before. I think it has to have the right amount of ease of use and right amount of functionality. ... and also the sleek and simple look and feel and makes you go "hmm I like that"
