The United Kingdom, for all its grumpy resentment of the United States, will always align with us in a severe crisis: Our mutual values are far closer than any Britain shares with either France or Germany. Anglo-American sparring can be vicious, but outsiders fail to grasp that its a family feud. And the family closes ranks to outsiders.
Of course we will always need to maintain our close relationship with the United Kingdom. There will be fueds and misunderstandings, but we must avoid overreacting and thus giving ammunition to Briain's hard left. The greatest partnership in human history has been that of The United States and the United Kingdom. No one should ever forget that!

What say you?

But Britain is also a part of Europe, not just geographically but because we choose to join the European Union, which is an equally important association for us.

I'd hate to think of people in this country trying to pick sides if America and Europe went to war.

Without trying to burst the bubble, the relationship between the UK and the US has always been very much a one-way one in favour of the United States. The US has never offered the UK anything in goodwill, or freely, while the same is not true when reversed.

The UK has just finished paying off a debt to the US that we have had since WW2 to the value of $1 billion, plus interest. And while recently, the US has cancelled debts greater than our own originally, the token gesture of not cancelling the remaining $250 or so million for us, is big slap in the face.

I don't resent the USs financial situation. The UK is the 4th welthiest country in the world per head of the population and overall. We dont need handouts.
And we have never been given them.
Dispite what I know is a fairly common American belief.

I also know that the main reason Americans have something against the British is due to the same causes of the American Revolution. Which to me, is rediculous. Especially when you consider that there are some places in the US that are still on guard and are waiting for the British to return.

I also dont like the American only view that the British have bad hygene and bad (I can't believe I'm having to say this) teeth.
I've seen America my friend, how many of you live, and how many of you look, and let me tell you, your compatriots have a bare-faced cheek saying such things about us.
Oh the irony.

If we are a family, and I would include Canada and Australia and New Zealand in that, then we are a disfunctional one, and the US would be the got-rich son of Britain that resents his parents. France and Spain being the others inthis love triangle.

I want you to know though, that the only thing I have against Americans is what they have against me. And since I am lower in your estimations because of your own beginings 12 generations ago, I cannot simply agree with what you say.

I disagree. Historically Britain, Germany and Russia had always been very close. It has only been in the last hundred years that Britain has been at war with Germany and politically at odds with Cold War era Russia. It was economic rather than social ties that caused Britain and the USA to become closer. Culturally Britain is closer to Europe by quite a margin, having travelled to the US and many nations in Europe (France, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Cyprus, the Czech Republic) I can say that the US is certainly culturally more different to the UK than any of these nations.

Having said all that the UK still should have ties to the USA. There is a lot of things I have seen in America that I think are good and I have several friends in the USA.

Personally I think Europe to be the brothers and sisters that the UK argues with all the time (like argue with my sisters) while the USA is a cousin in the family.

The whole world is one big family and we should all remember that!

Not so sure about the family feud bit. Yes the US did help us in our time of need, but, it was not for free, we have taken sixty years to pay them back!
Our Royal family had to change their name to "Windsor" during the war because of concern over their German ancestry.
Think all humans, of whatever race, are friends or enemies as and when it suits. \take the UK/Us and their treatment of both Iraq and Iran when they were feuding. Look whats happening now.
Think the UK/USA partnership is a bit like a salesman and customer with the US being the salesman!!

i say youre full of it.

England is the world power.. all america does is follow the french model.. they make wine and lose wars...

if we had a referendum youd be voted out... america has done more to destabilise the world than anyone else... i mean, who im their right mind messes with China... or North Korea... and who supports zionism in the middle east? (which is what caused all teh conflict in the first place)

sorry chap, but your history isnt the same as we read in our history books... you turn up late and go home early... your walled garden ensures the people only ever hear the official response... which is often a pack of lies and misdirection...

look at new orleans... because its a economically depressed area, which has high populations of hispanic and afro americans... but NO middle class rich white folks... you abandoned it.. and let it drown... you totally ignored the pleas for help from indonesia after the christmas tsunami.. 20 million dollars... our schoolkids donated more than that in their collective pocket money...

and whn katrina hit... we sat abck and watched as you all ran around like headless chickens..dying...

and why were you all dying? because no one had a bloody clue as to how to proceed... and in teh rarified air of america, the worlds (most powerful nation) it must stink to high heaven...

america needs the world far more than the world needs america... we, the English threw you out once for your extreme puritanical fundamentalist views... and we ought to do it again...

the atlantic ocean is just about wide enough... and so is the channel.... the risk proposed to our sovereignty are proportionate...

and one only has to look at iraq.. youve lost over 3000 soldiers.. weve lost 300, and your troops have killed most of them... you cant even distinguish between friendly and enemy troops...

and we wish we could forget it...
