From a logical stand point it's generaly not a good idea to buy a really expensive car for a first time driver, especially a really nice sports car. Even if they're careful you'll probably still scratch or bump into things as you gain experience, and for a porche the smallest blemish is gonna be pricey just to touch up, not even mentioning if something needs to be staightened or replaced all together. This paired with the fact that the car is fast, like everyone else they would want to show it off, which has a lot of potential for disaster with an unskilled driver.
But as far as if I think it wrong for a someone to buy an expensive vehicle for their child? simply, no. Every parents wants to give their children what they want or never had, some can do it, some can't that's the way the world turns and all it comes out to. So long as the person isn't overly arrogant or boastful to others just because they can't afford one as well, I see no reason to speak ill of them. I would have have less respect for the person spouting insults or degrading comment simply out of hatred wrapped in jealousy.

I was perfectly wealthy enough to do that for my child, but instead i got him a $7000 car that he will enjoy, love, and learn to drive properly (hes a total car nut, like me). She will never appreciate the car she got. Dont be jealous. She will smash her car in a few weeks or months. The 911s are very difficult to drive at the edge (or at least unintuitive).
And do yourself and your friend a favor: insist she goes to a local Porsche club of america Drivers education course. Its a track day that will teach her how to properly control her car. The cost shouldnt be an issue (its about 250 for a 2 day event, and you can rent a helmet and such). Not only is it a total blast, it could save your friends life. A 911 gives you that invulnerability feeling, especially in an inexperianced driver (yes she is inexperianced. no 17 year old is a good driver. NONE). Unfortunately, at the limit they do many things you wouldnt expect (unless youve learned to cope with them, like in a DE course like i mentioned).
Trust me, lack of car control skills cost my son 3 of his best friends.

I'm only 13 here, and to keep a car like that in good shape, you have to be an enthusiast. You can't go around and say "Look, I have a 911!" and know nothing about it. This car has been around for about 40 years, and you have to take care of all of them, these cars are made different than other assembly line cars, and each one may have a glitch in it, it's part of manufacturing. As for me, I'm still looking for a '73 RS, or a '73 911 to convert to an RS, because I'm and enthusiast and know what to do with these cars, I know people who have many Porsches, and you HAVE to know about them...

I wish I could find the link my friend sent me of a teenage Porsche driver who hit a concrete toll both at 100+mph, I could almost taste her brains from here. I thought it was nice that her hair was still stuck to the side of the concrete pillar, didn't see her skull among the blood mess.
Let us know when your friend's corpse photos are available...unless of course you are dumb enough to ride with her again...RIP(Rest in Pain!)

Wow, she sure is lucky to have parents like that, but I don't think its the best car to start out with since insurance is going to be a killer (well it might not matter to her family) and since she is young and inexperience, she should start off with an easier car to use, the Porsche will just spoil her, and she will expect every other car to handle like one, thats why you start from a crappy car and work your way up and reward yourself :)

wow you all must be poor people from california...i live in sewickley,pa...and a porsche is no different from a suburban or mustang to us. On a regular basis i see carrera gt's, gallrdo's, aston martin's, 355's, 360's but the thing is, our town is smaller than 1 sq. mile so all of those people are living next to eachother. Do you remember when the president visited that steel guys house for dinner? i could have thrown a baseball at him. Plus we have tons of celebrities because our town is so cool. Oh yeah there building a house next to my house, check it out...

a car like that for an inexperienced driver still in high school spells danger. those cars are designed for speed and are extremely agile.
I wish my parents were rich & didn't care about me

1- she crashes it, and daddy buys a cheaper car.
2 she crashes it , and no daddy doesnt buy another car.
3 she crashes it. and dies.
4 she lets someone else crash it. and back to 1-3.
these are only my predictions of the future.. and i garentee ONE of these will be the end result. sad sad truth. why? its the simple fact that spoiled kids dont care enough to keep it. they want the better one. have you seen the phantom? you should get one of those to show her a s s up.

i find it rather stupid for them to have done that.. but then you know the car will be trashed within a year.. instead of feeling jealous, it's motivation to work hard and stay in school and one day you will be able to afford things like that but the best part is that you Earned it and can feel self satisfaction in earing your way to prive you've talent and brains in comarison to someone just giving it to you when you've done nothing to earn it.
