A fitness club offers two water aerobics classes. there are currently 40 people regularly going to the morning class and attendence increases at a rate of 2 people per month. when will the number of people in the two classes be the same?

I think you're missing some information. So far, you know that you have two classes - we'll call them x and y. You also know (from your problem statement) that there are 40 people in one class now (we'll assume that they are in class x), and that every month the attendance goes up by 2. So all you have right now is something that says that your current month attendance for class x is x = 2a + 40 (where a is the number of months you're considering, starting from the day you counted 40 people in attendance). But you don't have any way of comparing this to class y - there isn't a mention of how many students overall or any increase in attendance for class y.
