Animal cells are typical of the eukaryotic cell, enclosed by a plasma membrane and containing a membrane-bound nucleus and organelles. Unlike the eukaryotic cells of plants and fungi, animal cells do not have a cell wall. This feature was lost in the distant past by the single-celled organisms that gave rise to the kingdom Animalia. Most cells, both animal and plant, range in size between 1 and 100 micrometers and are thus visible only with the aid of a microscope.

The animal cell is a typical eukaryotic cell. It ranges in size between 1 and 100 micrometers and is surrounded by a plasma membrane, which forms a selective barrier allowing nutrients to enter and waste products to leave. The cytoplasm contains a number of specialized organelles, each of which is surrounded by a membrane. There is only one nucleus and it contains all the genetic information necessary for cell growth and reproduction. The other organelles occur in multiple copies and carry out the various functions of the cell, allowing it to survive and participate in the functioning of the larger organism.

extracellularly? Plant cells have a cell wall, animal cells do not.
intracellularly: animal cells have spindle fibers (for replication), lysosomes (plant cells do not)
Plant cells have a water vacuole and chloroplasts (animal cells do not)
