How many of you were aware that this is international women's day?

How many of you can remember, or are aware what things used to be like for women?

How many of you can name a woman who has made a contribution to the better life most of us now have?

not worth mentioning:
That is why I added "or are aware......."
I do know that not everyone remembers how it used to be, I am however aware that some people do not know, because they have never asked, just took for granted that things are the way they are now.

I didn't know it was international women's day until I saw this question. However, I work in a male-dominated field like the answerer above me, and I am aware of many issues that have faced and continue to face women in the work force today. It still takes some effort to get some men to take you seriously. Women are still sadly lacking in the board rooms across America. But I have heard of success stories as well... hopefully they will become more common for those who wish it.

Of course I have no real idea of what womanhood used to be like... I wasn't there. But I can guess from reading and talking to other women with more experience than myself. Also, women's own perceptions of their status as a woman will change with the changing eras, just due to changing culture and people's outlook on life. Perhaps 100 years ago, women didn't have a problem with their lot in life.

As to women who have contributed to society as a whole... I know there are plenty. Unfortunately, their names don't come to mind, because this is not often a topic of discussion. But there are plenty of women scientists and engineers on record who did most of the thought and leg-work for their male co-workers while the co-worker would go on to get a nobel prize or some other recognition while the woman was ignored.

This is an interesting question, and it forces us to remember that all women should get more recognition for their efforts in society. Thanks!

I honestly didn't know until I saw the Question on the Yahoo! homepage.

I don't know that I need to remember what it "used" to be like for women as I am one working in a male dominated field! Would you ask an African American what racism "used" to be like?

I will say that in the United States women have things much better than they did even 50 years ago. I don't think this can be attributed to any one women, although some may try to make that claim. It is due to lots of women going after careers that were "just for men" and excelling in them. Hopefully it won't take another 50 years for women to realize full equality. Oh and I don't think we need a constitutional amenment to get there.

I was aware it was International Women's Day when I saw questions about it here on Yahoo Answers.

I don't remember much about how things used to be for women (I was born in the 80s). However, I read about it quite a bit when I took a women's studies course as a freshman.

Alice Paul, Alice Walker, Maya Angelou, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Elizabeth Blackwell are women who have contributed to women's rights through literature, politics, etc.
