Basically, you'll have more time on your hand and more freedom than you've ever had. It will be tempted to party and blow off school.

Don't, if you want to make anything of yourself. You'll have plenty of time to party even if you study.

Ok, less if you're one a pre-med or engineering track, but you won't be confined to the library studying either.

Make sure that you keep up with your work. Don't go out partying if you have a 8 AM in the morning, and make sure that you go to all your classes. If you don't procrastinate, you'll have plenty of time to have fun with friends and you'll feel less stressed out come finals time. If you have a problem in a class, talk to your professor or TA sooner rather than later. They'll often give you extra help or a break if they know that you're honestly trying, but you're having trouble with a concept.

Socially, join one or two clubs or interest groups to meet new people. If you can, talk to your roommate before you get there about who's bringing what, pet peeves, and when you get there, come up with a roommate contract about what is acceptable and what isn't. Be willing to talk to people you wouldn't normally talk to. They might just become your most interesting and informative friends.

congrats! welcome to the club of college kids...you're going to have a blast. The best advice that I can offer is come to school with an OPEN mind...the first year gives you a chance to meet people from all over the nation (and world possibly) and you will need to confront some of your own assumptions. Everyone has something to offer and you may find that some of your closest friends may not appear to have much in common with you at first glance...try out for a few sports teams or clubs (i.e. democrats, republicans, amnesty international, etc.). Stay up late and have crazy conversations with your dorm mates. Kiss a few people. Try to laugh even when the academic portion gets stressful. The only thing that I would say is try not to compromise some of the values that you may have (i.e. religiously, politically) while still being respectful of other beliefs...enjoy it kid..it will be a great ride.
