for a 1996 the dodge intrepid uses ATF +3
actually, all chrysler, mitsubishi cars use ATF +3 up to 2001, where they changed over to ATF +4, which is 100% backwards compatible with ATF +3
when Daimler bought Jeep, Jeeps then used ATF +3 and now ATF +4 for 2002 and up.

ATF +3 or ATF +4 (which is synthetic).
Do not use Dexron III/Mercon.
If you want proof, you should ask the parts department at your local Dodge dealer. ATF +3 and/or ATF +4 is available at all parts stores and at Wal-Mart.
