They were raped by the other countries, driven by France, after WW1. Due to the Treaty of Versailles there was no way the country could recover financially which layed the platform for an extremist party to gain power by promising to restore Germany's former glory and bring it out of poverty.

It didn't fail, it simply had a loophole in it that allowed a psychopath? to gain control and then shut it down.
