I am currently working on a history project and need examples that involve something good stemming from disasters. For example, canned goods were invented to preserve food being shipped to soldiers during wartime, the advent of modern day nursing began during the Civil War opening a door for women to work in the medical field, and sonar was invented during World War 2 to detect enemy submarines, but afterward was used to map ocean topography. I realize all three of these examples relate to war, but any disaster--whether it be natural or manmade--would fit into this project. Thanks for your help!

You might be better off working backward- picking a disaster and finding out what good came of it... There are too many examples. Let's see: The Titanic sinking led to stricter regulation of ship safety... Oh! The Triangle Shirtwaist fire! That led to workplace safety regulations!

How about earthquakes? After the 1989 Loma Prieta or 1994 Northridge earthquake a law was passed in CA that required structures, such as freeway overpasses, to be retrofitted to withstand future earthquakes. Also I've heard that since the tsunami 2 years ago there are more tsunami warning devices in different places. These are two ideas you'll have to research to get the facts straight, but I hope it helps.

One example: The persecution of Protestants in Europe led to their mass emigration to the New World and the subsequent creation of the United States of America - the most democratic country in the world.

Another example: The AIDS epidemic in Europe and USA forced many closeted gay men to come out, which eventually led to more acceptance of gay people in society (because many people suddenly found out that gay people are everywhere and that they are just as normal as everyone else.)

President Bush. Because of Bush, this country will not elect another Republican president for at least 100 years.
