For two days I have been expecting a package to be delivered, come to find out that the UPS man left it off at one of my neighbors who signed for it. UPS and myself were unable to determine who the neighbor was and were waiting for the delivery man to contact me to let me know; this evening there is a knock at my door, one of my neighbors (who i trust) hands me the opened package, missing its contents that the person left by my floors elevators. While the package wasn't expensive and UPS will compensate me, it irks me that a neighbor could be so silly as to sign for the package and then steal the contents. No I am not looking for them to get the chair or anything; but I would like for them to be aware that this behavior is unacceptable.

Please if you can back up your answers with facts and if at all possible links. Thanks in advance.

Yes I admit I am extremely upset, I try to be a good neighbor and it is situations like this that make me wonder why I even bother.

You have just described mail tampering which is a felonious offense with serious jail time attached. Additionally this unknown individiual commited larceny which is a misdemeanor and depending on your state and the circumstances could be another felony charge. For example, in California if the same person was found guilty of larceny or any other type of theft in the past they can be found guilty of felony petty theft. It might also be considered a felony theft since it was commited in the act of another felony (the mail tampering). So in reality this person or persons would be facing very serious jail time. I hope I was able to answer your question fully and to your satisfaction.

Oh, man! I would be upset! I'm not sure if it is considered a felony, but I do know that it is punishable threw the Postal Service! My father in law is retired from the Postal Service. If you feel you need to set an example, call your Post Master in your zip code and he/she will guide you as to your rights and what you need to do. Also, I would find out exactly what UPS delivery person actually delivered this package and ask him to give the information to the Post Master on identifying the person that signed for the package! Good Luck!

Yes, last I heard it was against the law to mess with someone else's mail (or package) because as the government says, that should only be brought to the rightful owner and noone else. That was a stupid mail man/delivery guy. He should've at least left the package in the right address or if not, asked for ID.

No, uses its a federal offense because is government operated. Ups is a privately owned company so it's a misdemeanor (theft, burglary) unless the items were over 1000 dollars than it becomes a felony.

ok there are two things ups has done this to us recently jerks. the sender and ups has to pay for it as does the person who delivered i t. second the man who signed for it for you could be in trouble. messing with the mail is a felony but this is ups not part of the usps.

contact the sender and contact the mail people www.usps.gov btw messing with the mail is a federal offense. even dumping a drink intentionally on someone mail is a crime.

for fed laws go to www.gpoacces.gov and see federal regulation or us code

Some courier services have a proof of delivery service.

this is when they require someone's signature to release the package, unfortunately, that signature could be provided by a neighbour or caretaker etc. next time use a more secure delivery service.

Get everything in writing, like the delivery manifest, photos of the contents when you recieved the box etc.

i think it is "illegal", but i'm not sure if it's a felony. i mean, it is a felony to mess with mail, but i'm guessing that's because the post office is part of the US government. you should definitely talk to your neighbor, call UPS, and maybe the police just to check. what's the harm?

Yes- it's still a felony even if UPS delivers it. It's still mail fraud and could be considered theft if the contents were stolen.
