If you are going to build a site for business purposes, make sure to get your own domain name. Its cheaper than you think. Here is a guide to getting started: http://www.richkahmer.com/build-a-website.html

It really depends on how much you are willing (and able) to do yourself and what your budget is. My partner paid £200 for the design of a site but that was through a friend so we saved a fortune in comparison to his normal sites.

You can buy space for about £30 a year and a domain name for about £2 for two years, but a .com will cost you more than a .org for example, and I'm guessing the prices are similar no matter where in the world you are. Some servers offer a free domain name when you buy the space.

It's always worth buying your own name, it looks much more professional than www.freespace.yourname.freeserver.358603491.com for example, and people will remember a short one.

It also depends on how much space you want (how many pages your site will be or how many pictures/tracks etc you want on there) and whether or not you want to pay someone else to maintain it or whether you want to do that yourself. If someone else built it then you may need the same software as the designer to maintain it yourself, i.e. flash or adobe.

If you want to do it all yourself and don't need it to look too professional then you can get a free web site and either use any templates provided or a basic programme like Frontpage, which is simple to use. But you can still use your own domain name.

If you need to learn any html (or other coding) to do it yourself try http://www.htmlgoodies.com for help, I found it invaluable when I was learning to make a basic charity based site.

Depending on how big the site is and what type of site it is, you could pay anywhere from 300.00 to 3000.00. It really depends on who you hire to do your website. The cost to maintain, again, depends upon who you hire. Basically, you will be charged for building the template, content (this is usually your responsiblity to provide), Hosting, Domain name and maintainance. Hosting can cost anywhere from a few dollars to 199.00 a year. Domains are usually 6.50 - 10.00 a year. Maintainance fees CAN be expensive depending upon what you want on your site (music, photos etc.), and who you hire. example: I know a designer that built a site for a car dealership and because the upgrades are enormous, he charges 800.00 for each update.

if you do it yourself, and just buy the space, i've seen it as low as 5 bucks a month, that's nothing fancy though, you could get for free if you don't mind popups and banner ads... many times you need to know html to do anything cool, that it outside of there limited templates...
