Hi Guys, I was in an accident on jan 4 2007. Initially my back hurt, but the pain was not really bad. But perhaps 2-3 weeks after the accident my back now hurts really, really bad. I had a cervical spine ct that was negative. I had a thoracic spine x-ray that was negative. My back pain is a sharp burning pain around the L1-T12 region. I don't know if the thoracic ct will show that. Anyways, at least there are no fractures in the cervical spine or thoracic spine.

I don't feel like my doctor really believes my pain. I never complain of back, but this is really frustrating, since nothing shows up on the exams.

Has anyone had a similar experience after a car crash? If so, how long did your pain last, and what did you do to alleviate it?

If there are no fractures try an osteopath. You might have misaligned your vertabrae. It seems too long ago to be musculoskeletal pain.

First of all, the behavior of your pain is not all that abnormal. Often, people have a gradual onset of pain after a car accident.

Your doctor is frustrated with you, and this is also not unusual! Here is the thing: your family doc's job is to make darn sure that whatever it is your are complaining of is not going to kill you. Now, this is a big job, and an important one, but once they have figured out that you are not in mortal danger, some of them are clueless as to what to do next.

If you are not in physical therapy yet, you really ought to be. The PT is the biomechanics and movement sciences expert on your health care team, and they will help decrease your pain and improve your function.

Go to APTA.org, click on "find a PT", and search your home area. Ask for a PT who is a specialist in orthopedics (OCS), or one that has a lot of car accident experience.

Good luck!

I would really recommend that you do some stretching exercises to limber your back up. This is important to keep mobility and lessen the pain.

On all fours, arch your back up and make it very rounded, hold it like that for 10 seconds and repeat this 5 - 10 times.

Then arch your back down so your back sinks in the middle and hold for 10 seconds and repeat 5 - 10 times.

Try to do this twice a day.

Also stand up and twist round from the waist, keeping your feet shoulder width apart and facing them forward. It should only be the top half of your body that turns. When you have turned as far as you can, hold it for 5 seconds and come back to the centre position. Then twist the other way. Repeat this 10 times.

You really need to do this otherwise stiffness can set in and you'll always have back problems.

Hope that helps.

Seems you are not happy anymore with your present doctor. See another doctor who will put you up for an MRI-this test shows things which the CT scan cannot pick up.
