My calculations say I need a 5 molar solution of hydrochloric acid for my planning investigation homework.

Is that too concentrated to use in a school lab?

No. Higher concentrated solutions are not usually used in lab for students.
However, all stock solutions in the lab have their various concentrations.
On the reagent bottles there are some concentration values on them.
Example: 0.5M BaCl2,6.0M HCl,6.0M HNO3
don't worry about knowing it because the reagent bottles are marked with either of these concentrations. It has already being prepared by your tutor or lab technician or assistant. You only have to make sure that during addition of any specified reagent, you look on the bottle for the Molarity or concentration.
All these reagent are not too harmful but don't temper with experimenting with it on your body or anywhere unless you're instructed to do so.
Taking unnecessary risk in the lab could cause deduction of points from your overall score.Don't be scared to use it if you're allowed to.
I performed an experiment today using 1mL of 6.0M HCl in addition to other reagents to test for carbonate ion.
GOOD LUCK

Your school technicians will have concentrated HCl which they use to make up solutions for you. That is 12M, they may provide you with a 5M solution for A level work if a.) you are using small volumes, no more than a few mls and b.) they may want you to use a fume hood.

5M HCl is not actually a particularly strong acid, (I have some sat on my bench at work) however I think it is beyond what would normally be used in a school laboratory. I suggest you double check your calculations (it is so easy to miss a power of 10 and 0.5M would be a standard concentration used in schools) and then go talk to the teacher and see if they would be able to provide you with 5M HCl.

From my O level days, I would say we only used 1 and 2 molar solutions

Probably. Schools tend to use just 0.1M as standard! I'm just about to finish my A-levels and the most concentrated I've ever used is 2M and that was for a flame test. 5M is very concentrated for a strong acid like HCl and I would be extremely surprised if they provided you with some!

Too concentrated to be left on the bench..yes but I'm sure there is some conc.HCl in the locked back room (We used it at A level). The technician uses it to make up the 0.5M,1M,2M solutions that are used day to day.It would be easy to make a 5M solution.

We used to have Conc HCL in our school lab on the benches all the time and we used to dissolve our ham sandwiches in it.That was some time ago though so I expect it is not allowed anymore.

My high school uses 3 molar, they won't let my teacher even BUY anything more than like 7...and they have to get all these credentials from her before she can buy 1M...

I usually work with .5M or 1M. For one lab though, we used 5M, but my teacher had sure we were aware of the dangers of it.
