My writing is terrible when i use a ball point or gel tipped pen. I use a cross fountain pen and love it. I have only let one other person use it and that is my tutor who i know is anally retentive in every way.

I use several different fountain pens, including a variety of other pens for both writing and drawing. I would very rarely consider using a ballpoint. Once you have learnt to use a 'pen' then your character and even mood can be shown through your handwriting. As a calligrapher I'm not saying that my handwriting is better or worse than anybody else's, that would be facetious of me. But I do feel that it has a greater ability to show character and emotion. Once you have mastered a number of different nibs your writing can take on a number of different characters. This cannot be achieved using a ballpoint pen. Sadly, manuscript is in a decline. With many people word processing and selecting ready made fonts, the ART of handwriting is becoming restricted to less practitioners.
Outside the range of fountain pens, is an exciting world of technical and drawing pens. Why spend a few pence and have a try of simple dip and write/draw pens. Simply a holder, a nib and possibly a reservoir. Wonderful experience! Try a whole variety of nibs with exciting names like,Joseph Gillot, Round-hand, Italic, Script and Poster to name but a few. Interested yet? Visit www.specialistcrafts.co.uk . If you get hooked try technical pens possibly like staedtler, rotring, pelikan graphos and many more You may even surprise yourself and get the bug. After all pens are very individual, as individual as the people who use them!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why be one of the crowd, become an individual !

I love my fountain pen, but I'm dyslexic so I don't write better than anyone really. I just like the flow of it. I prefer a nice laptop though, but you can't take those into exams or into seminars to take notes!! I also like my fountain pen for writing my novel when I'm out and about. Sitting in a cafe with a notebook and fountain pen (and a coffee), ahhhh, it's a little bit of heaven.

I personally work in WH Smiths, so I guess its my job to know about pens!
Fountain pens do look neat, but only if you have neat handwqriting. They aren't magic, so if you can't write well in ballpoint, you won't in fountain pen!
F.Ps can smudge easily too, and you have to carry spare cartridges around with you. Gel based rollerballs work well, and I always find these are the neatest, as some "biro"s look scratchy. F.Ps do look nicer on paper, but to be honest it depends which is most comfortable to write with. If you are more used to a ball point, stick to it.

It took a few days to get adjusted at first, but I love the way my handwriting looks when I use a fountain pen. It's considerably sloppier when I use a ballpoint! Others may have a different experience though.

I still use a fountain pen (just, finally, got rid of the old quill! only joking). It doesn't improve your handwriting but, since you have to take more time in actually writing, it may well appear neater than a quickly scrawled ballpoint. Of course, answering your question required neither pen nor ballpoint!

I LOVE PENS!!
I use lots of different pens as they all have diferent writing and drawing qualities. I like fountain pens, dip pens, different types of roller balls (gel and liquid ink), felt tip, I have an extensive collection of coloured gel pens, and chinese writing brushes and lots of other brushes. And I like to find pens with unusual coloured inks and fountain pen ink in lots of different colours (my boyf uses even more he has technical drawing pens and air brushes and cool looking things).
I don't want to be at work. I want to go home pick up my stuff and go drawing!
