Yeah. I once had a Guyana-Jamaican friend and she hated to be called African-American, she would always say "I'm not African, I'm Jamaican" Most people don't know where Guyana is. And in Africa, there are white people who say they are African so you have to differentiate the race from the nationality.

I would rather someone describe me as being a black American because I'm not from Africa and if you want to be technical i am on;y of African descent on one side of my family ( other side white and Indian) but then again I'm not "black" I'm a really light brown color. I think when we think about it there isn't a proper way to describe people as far as being black or white or African American or whatever because I don't know anyone that's all white or all black everyone that I know has at least two other flavors also. That's blacks and whites I only have 1 Mexican friend but his mother is Mexican also but his dad is white so I think that we should just stop trying to put each other in a group by our skin color because times have changed everybody in America has a lil mix of something. We should just call ourselves and others by their names.

I prefer to be called black, since I can no way shape or form trace my roots back to Africa and not for lack of trying.

The geneology and study of my history that I have found is mostly for the US. I was born here as well as the previous 4 generations of family before me. I hate the term ***** like my birth certificate says, because it comes from an old spanish word to mean, "Black Object."

In my travels around the world, black is associated to Americans. Jamaicain usually don't refer to themselves as black. Neither do Africans, etc....

If I called a black person here African-American I'd get laughed at considering I'm Irish...

...and some foolish people have called African-Irish people (?!?) that before! PCness can get a bit nuts.

It would be better to use proper English and avoid bad grammar like the term "more better." Something is either better, or it isn't.

I will take my cue from people of that community about what term they want us to use.

However, I prefer to call all people "Mary" or "John" or whatever their name is, rather than labeling them by race.

I don't like either of them. I wasn't born in Africa and I'm brown, not black. I'm waiting for the newest name to come along, so I can be officially "offended" by those two names.

There is no "more better".
It's either "better" or "best".

The answer is that there is NO good term. SOMEONE is going to be offended no matter how you refer to them. You may as well walk up to them and ask them what their preference is. Or just drop the reference all together!

How about: "Content of Character,.. not color of skin"?

If the above names don't suit you, use criminal, or welfare recipient.
