It was pinkish, like a caucasian's flesh. Don't you think that's weird? They actually had that name still when I was a kid (70's). What about the other kids in class who weren't caucasian? Pretty rude, huh?

I know that in the 70's and at least part of the 80's, it was still called "flesh" or "skin", so I don't know what the 1962 reference is about.

I too remember it from the 70`s. It wasn`t weird. Where I lived as a child I had a lot of black friends and as kids coloring they just used brown. it wasn`t even a thought back then.

The color Flesh transformed into Peach in 1962 as the Civil Rights Movement helped open American eyes to diversity. Likewise, Indian Red became Chestnut in 1999.

Thoughtless, certainly. Even caucasian flesh comes in different tones... just go to the makeup isle of any department store to see the many choices in foundations. Where did the term "caucasian" come from, anyhow? Doesn't it have "asian" in there? Does "cauc" mean "non-"?

I use the Crayola Multicultural Crayons. They come in lots of different skin colors and include: black, sepia, peach, apricot, white, tan, mahogany, and burnt sienna.

Yes, I remember. Are we telling our age? lol But, I don't think it's rude though. I'm not in any way being prejudiced and not recognizing other skin tones. I just think society has become extreme when it comes to political correctness. Actually that color, as I remember it, would be perfect for the color of my dog's nose.

Sure, I had "flesh" colored crayons as a kid...in the 80's. And as another poster said, kids with a different skintone just colored with a different crayon!

That's why they changed the color to Peach. I think the name lasted into the late 80's to early 90's before they changed it.
