If you made a list of 5-10 memorable history photographs which ones would you include. I know that there is not ONE definitive list, but I think some of you would think of some that we didn't mention. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thnx

2. Edith Shain getting kissed by an unidentified sailor in Times Square on VJ day
3. Jack Ruby shooting Lee Harvey Oswald
4. John Filo's photograph of Mary Anne Vechio screaming over the body of her boyfriend after he was shot in the parking lot by National Guardsmen at Kent State
5. The accidental napalm boming of a Vietnamese village and the naked victims running down the dirt road
6. The ecstatic daughter racing to hug her returning POW father on the tarmac at a Southern California runway in 1973
7. FDR sitting in the back seat of his car smoking his cigarette with his cigarette holder grinning after his victory
8. The firefighter hold the dead baby in front of the Alfred P. Murrah building after the Oklahoma City bombing of 1994.
9. The space shuttle Challenger moments after explosion with the two booster rocket smoke trails askew as they flew off in different directions
10. The Beatles stepping down the stairs of the jet at JFK airport and waving to crowds in February of 1964

Of course--like you said--there is NO difinitive list and I'm sure I missed some that someone else will catch, but these are among MY favorites and most memorable photographs.

The photos of the New York Skyline on the day of 9/11 with the smoke billowing from the WTC are definitely memorable in the minds of all Americans. Also, the picture of President Kennedy holding the hand of his son as he walks down the presidential path. Also, a picture of the Berlin Wall coming down and ending the separation of the two Germanys into one united Germany. Another historical picture is the one with the men building the transcontinental railroad system across the United States and first initiating the steam engine. Also, another picture is that of the using of the Gillotine on King Louis XVI in France. Pictures with Stalin and Woodrow Wilson during WWII. Pictures of Mother Teresa doing humanitarian work. Pictures of the soldiers of Vietnam trudging through the canals of Vietnam with guns atop their heads.

Well, obviously the most famous photograph ever taken was Joe Rosenthal's shot of the flag raising on Mt. Suribachi, Iwo Jima, February, 1945. The shot of the sailor kissing the girl in Times Square on V-J Day was another famous one.

A couple that stick in my mind:

The picture of the young Vietnamese girl running away from her village, naked and screaming in terror after an American bomb attack. It shows vividly the horrors of war.

The picture of Isembard Kingdom Brunel in all his Vicorian finery stood before a huge length of chain. Its a picture that symbolised Victorian ingenuity, and the dawn of our modern world.

Most of the above mentioned, plus I would add the Hindenburg disaster.
