This is a great recipe for fake blood I learned from a special effects make-up expert:

1. about a cup and 1/2 of corn syrup
2. 2 drops of RED food dye
3. 1 drop of BLUE food dye
*4. about a cup of cholecet syrup
(*is a special ingredient it makes it thicker and darker)
**don't make exact mesurments just eyeball everything untill it looks good stir it all togeather with a coffee stirer and you've got altuntic looking fake blood! Have fun with it.

Personally, I would thing that actor even thought they appear on TV and Movies, they still would have blood in their veins. I don't think corn syrup or ink would keep them alive very long.

There are all kinds of different recipes for stage blood; they usually include, as you suggest, corn syrup and red food coloring. I worked on an especially GORY production of "Julius Caesar" once where the fight guy mixed some chunky peanut butter in with the other stuff, which was AMAZING...gave it a real thick, oozy texture...nice.

The make-up and/or costume department take care of it.
