A Law Degree would help. Usually You would start as an office holder in your local city (ie. Mayor, Councilman, County Auditor) This will help you with your networking with the right people. Also Join clubs ( Rotors club, Jaycees etc..) Businesses are involved with these clubs. So Now you'll have Political support & Business support.

Some governors started off with movie careers: Ronal Reagan and Arnold Schwartzeneger. The current governor of PA was once a prosecutor and was once mayor of Philadelphia.
The previous governor of PA was a member of the US House of Representatives before becoming governor.
A law degree is not necessary. Making a name for yourself, somehow, is necessary.
Start in local politics. Find out who are the power bosses. Get connected. Move up when vacancies in higher office occur.

Have something honest to offer. Look at Jesse Ventura. Wasn't he a wrestler?
