Isn't it funny that alcohol, a drug, is never mentioned in any of this debate? Alcoholism and alcohol-related behavior kill far more people than all the others combined.
To answer your Q: YES. Will they ever be legalized? NO.
Think about the billions of dollars made every year. Who gets that money? Cartels, dealers, cops, judges, etc. Who will lose out if drugs are legalized? Cartels, dealers... Whenever a serious debate picks up speed, a massive PR campaign shoots it down.
Who pays for the ads, the lobbyists, the lunches? The cartels - so they can pay the dealers, the cops, the judges.
As far as soft/recreational, I think we should do as Amsterdam does. Cordon off a section of town for the IV drug users, let 'em deal and use to their hearts' content, and ignore them. As for the other drugs, legalize and standardize. Sell and tax. Voila!

i do agree that something should set up to legalize drugs, drugs (including marijuana) is one HUGE black market that is going to happen no matter what laws restrict it, millions even billions of dollars are dealed daily, If it were legalized there should be strong laws on it (no driving on drugs, must be 25) something like that. I however would rather keep drugs out and legalize marijuanna, again it is one huge market that generates an astronomical amout of assets. Also legalizing domestic production of marijuana will create a byproduct called hemp which can be made into paper, cotton alternative, lotions and much much more. Our government can sure use the taxes collected from the sales of this and it would reduce the amount of money that needs to be payed to the police force for catching, convicting and housing a convicted felon of drugs.

I do think some drugs should be legalised, but if you listen to the so called experts they say all drugs cause long term problems. I don't fancy the thought of people driving their cars when they are jacked up on heroin or some other class A drug though. But i cant really see the harm in smoking a little bit of weed from time to time.

I say legalise pot!! And apply taxes and age limits just like they do with alcohol..although I think alcohol is worse. They should put their time , efforts and government finances spent..on something that`s really creating a problem..crack..and other man made drugs in labs for instance. I wish that ALL drug users`.."drug of choice "was pot. Then the cops would get bored, I suppose, cuz` all the potheads would be watching movies and EATING!!! Sorry, pot smokers are no threat to anyone..and are even appreciated by those with a sense of humor!! And why would the government NOT want to get more of our taxes? Seems that`s what they do best.

Your idea makes economic sense.
By prosecuting users and traffickers the government is attacking (ineffectively) the demand side of the equation.
If drugs were legalised as you suggest and the revenues earned used to rehabilitate and educate people, the whole process would be safer, the supply side would feel the heat as the danger would be taken out of the whole transaction.

With the money spent on the war on drugs we could have a national health care system . With the revenue generated by taxing drugs we could pay off Bush's war

There are places in the world that have legalized soft drugs like pot and mushrooms. Society has not collasped there. In fact crime is reduced. The money spent on the war on pot is a big waste.

I say legalize some of the weaker ones (like marijuana), or at least make the strong ones weaker and sell them legally.

Ban the lot and register addicts to receive 'alleviation'. So much less hassle. Like we need more laws. You know the risk, so don't do it or face the consequences, simple. I'm sick and tired of 'grey law'.
