Ya got to use your diaphram for singing. And sing LOUD until you are trained.

Singing from the diaphragm will help correct a lot of mistakes that are happening above the shoulders. It may not be exactly the cause but it is a good start.

You should be taking deep breaths that lower the abdominal floor, and do NOT cause your shoulders to rise. You should keep your head still with regard to reaching or digging for notes that are a little higher or lower than your comfortable range. You can, of course, express emotions with your head, look around at your audience, etc.

One thing my director used to tell us is that we tend to stretch up for high notes (remember Alfalfa from the Little Rascals? Classic example of this), when actually tucking your neck down a bit will help you reach them easier by positioning the throat to accept the amount of air at the speed needed to make a high pitched sound. High notes tend to be more nasally, and this is usually why...by reaching up you make the mouth cavity smaller and tighter and the air has no where to go BUT the nose.

Another breathing detail is that you inhale fast through the nose and exhale slowly/sustained through the mouth (which is the singing). So if you are breathing correctly, you CAN'T sing through your nose.

If you open your mouth more from the back, relax the throat, the air resonates deeper in your mouth without going into your sinus cavity.

ok ... singing through your nose only happens when you're not letting the air out of your lungs correctly.

Try doing breathing exercises. Also do A,E,I,O,U exercises. (Say each of those vowels slowly and out loud. No shouting! Take a deep breath and then sing them out loud)

I hope you start to notice a difference. Good Luck!
