While no one can really tell you how to write words that are "not stupid," here are some words of advice I recommend.

Avoid rhyme. Often "stupid lyrics" have forced rhymes; that is, the songwriter uses a word simply because it rhymes, builds a line around that word, and ends up with something meaningless. Songs do not need to rhyme.

Know what you're writing about before you start. Is it a love song? A song about pain? A political protest song? If you define it first, it will be easier. Often people just start writing without knowing what it's about. If your song is political or social in nature, research the issue fully.

Avoid cliches.

Do not write if you do not know what it means. Sometimes people come up with a string of words that sound interesting but do not mean anything. If you can't explain it, erase it (if you become successful, people will ask you to explain it).

Write with the proper tools. Use a dictionary, thesaurus and/or rhyming dictionary, but carefully avoid the pitfalls mentioned in rule 1. A good vocabulary is the key to good lyrics (they are, people forget, merely strings of words). However, avoid being too technical--you will sound like a pseudointellectual.

If you usually start with the music and write lyrics to it, flip it around. Write lyrics paying attention only to rhythm (how many beats are in each line) and then write music to your finished words. There is no correct order in songwriting, despite what some people say.

If you repeat a line, make sure it is important.

Hope these help!

Well, I used to have that problem. Alot of it was that I would try to force introspection and emotion into them, and they sounded forced. It was crap, really.

Then I just started not taking myself so seriously when the time came to put words down, and now I've written such masterpieces as "Pirates vs. Ninjas" and "Calling Captain Cup on the Commode Phone".

But remember, you can't go wrong with love songs.
