My car is a 1994 lexus es300 and automatic. The car has D as the weakest D2 as second, and DL as strongest. While i was being dumb and trying stuff like switching gears while moving i was at D and then D2 and rpm jumped by .5 and then DL jumped by 1.5-2 rpm and it pulled back kinda hard(which always happens when i try this) So is that bad. Also answer this, im going at D until 2rpm to 2.5 and then i switch to D2 and it goes to 4 rpm then i switch to DL and it goes up and its really smooth, no pulling back. All at 40mph, so can someone tell me if thats bad for the car, even the smooth scenario?

All that shifting will put a lot of extra wear and tear on our cars tranny. So yes, it is bad.

You can shift gears in an automatic tranny; but you can not do it while pressing on the gas. You need to release pressure on accelerator while you shift. This is what is causing the rpm jump. It is also hell on the automatic clutch due to fact rpms are at 2000 when clutch engaged and then rpms jump to 3000 when clutch re-engages. I would either practice concentrating on this or let the auto tranny do it's job.

Just let the automatic transmission do the work for you without shifting it yourself. However, if you are going down a steep grade, it's okay to gradually shift downward at lower speeds to let the engine act as a partial brake without overheating the brake pads.

yes it is. there is no reason to do that with an automatic. maybe if you are going down a steep grade or over rough roads, but otherwise, let the transmission do its job. if you like to shift a lot, get a stick shift. and a lexus yet. tsk, tsk

Yes, that is bad because it is putting more wear on your transmission. Have the chip checked out. Of course, you would not have this problem if you drove a manual .

STOP doing that. It will cost ya big bucks when the tranny dies.
