What came first the color orange or the fruit the orange? Some friends and I were debating this at lunch the other day. Thought I would get some other peoples opinions. What do you think or know?

The human brain's interpretation of the wavelength of light we call "orange" likely came after the existence of the fruit we call an orange. Humans are only about 6 million years old at the most. I'm sure oranges have been here longer. That said, I'm sure there were orange flowers before the orange existed.

Well, other fruits are orange in color so that color could have come to the fore before the orange was produced. Maybe tangerines came first and started the color orange.

Following the rules of comparative linguistics, orange, the fruit, came first. The fact that other things share similar color, is indicative of the name differentials i.e. they are called something different because they are different. Only one has the name orange even when it isn't.

I am sorry, I am missing the relation between the two. But, If you think of orange color as the wavelength that causes the color orange to exist, then it comes first.

The food probably. I don't think anyone gave a rats *** back in the day what color it was, they just wanted to eat. Maybe they called orange something else, then when color came along, it got named orange.

There are other plants, fruits and vegetables that have an orange color (apricots, peaches, pumpkins).

Long before there was someone to say something had an orange color there were plants that were orange colored.

fruit was first , since there was no name to associate the color of the fruit to the actual color.
