My friend and I have tried just about everything to get this screw loose, and I think that we stripped the head. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get it loose?

1. try some WD-40 that might work, let it soak in a little first.
2. use the biggest screwdriver that will fit in the slot, don't let the screw driver slip in the slot or else it will strip the slot.
3. try getting a channel locks on the edge, sideways, it might grab and loosen the screw.
4. they make a tool that you can hit on the end of with a hammer while it is on the screw and it will loosen the screw by turning counter-clockwise. sorry i don't know the name of that tool
5. try a drill, you can drill right through the head and the screw will not hold the 2 pieces together any more but then you won't be able to use the same hole again.

Your hardware store will have a set of dies used just for this purpose, You will have to drill a hole in the screw and then put the bit inside the screw. If the screw is too small for this, and sunk into the material so far you can't get it with pliers or something, you can try heating the area arount it. If all else fails you can grind the top off and might get the pieces to come apart.

CRAFTSMAN makes a set of bits that will get just about any screw out of anything. for twenty bucks you can own a brand new set of easy-out handy-bits! they are self drilling and reqire no bit changes. just pick the right size for the job and put your drill in reverse. the bits do the rest!!
and no, i don't work at sears!

A small drill bit in the center. Drill out. Then use an "easy-out".
