Most cheap permanent magnets are iron and ferrite magnets. The more powerful, industrial magnets are ceramic oxides of transition and rare earth metals. Neodymium oxide and samarium-cobalt oxide magnets are many times stronger than ferrite magnets. I have some small 1cmx1cm neodymium magnets on my cabinet at work. I have to keep them about 3 feet away from my monitor otherwise it distorts the image.

Neodymium Iron Boron (NdFeB) is a very common material, and what we used in my former job when we needed magnets.
