I have decided that I want to teach at the community college or university level and am prepared to go back to school for an advanced degree but I have not yet decided on which field I will pursue.

My biggest concern is with job availability and job security once I invest the time and money for an advanced degree. I'm wondering which fields/subjects have the highest demand for professors/instructors? Which areas would offer the best job security?

My second-hand knowledge of the college teaching field is that the working conditions are getting worse with every passing year. The use of tenure is on the wane, with colleges making use of adjunct teachers more and more. Those adjunct teachers are not paid well and may not get benefits.

Before you invest the time and money in an advanced degree, I think it's worth your effort to do a serious survey of as many college teachers as you can get hold of to ask for their advice.

Math, computers and foreign language are hot fields and most all degrees have to have some classes in all of these fields.

Hope this helps,

I would say business would be one of the best areas- then you can choose your specialty like marketing, communications, management, accounting, economics, finance, etc.

anything in the medical field like nursing, human sciences, chemistry, biology, etc
