I have an American friend and, during conversation earlier today, asked him what the weather would be like in his corner of America this time of year.

He politely informed me that, as a country, 'America' doesn't actually exist, as it's full name is the 'United States of America', and that calling the country simply America is actually a very common misnomer. Is this true?

That is indeed correct! As a matter of fact it's actually a union of separate states, as was supposedly the Soviet Union and United Kingdom - which consists of the countries of England, Scotland, Wales, and part of Ireland. We're kinda' like what the Europeans are attempting with the EU, only with a much better organized and stronger central government (and not as oppressive as the Soviets). As you know, the proper name of a country is "state" The United States of America is simply composed fifty sovereign states, complete with their own Armed Forces (National Guard), joined together in a federal (strong central government) agreement. That is why when the President addresses us annually, it's called a "state of the UNION" address. Once upon a time some states, which were called to task by the other states for oppressing their own people as slaves, attempted to secede from the union and formed a confederacy (weak central government - like the EU). This attempt caused the Civil War, and I'm glad to say that they failed, though at the expense of much blood. That is why the state of our union is STRONG as opposed to the disintegration of the Soviets and resentment of some of the non-English nationals in the UK (the Irish and a sizable minority of Scots).

The continent is called "North America" There is a "Central America" and a "South America"... so therefore, any country in North, Central, or South America is an "American" Country... So... yes, it's a misnomer. America is NOT a country... however, The United States of America IS a country.

Yes. America is the name of 2 continents, North America and South America. As a Canadian, I am technically also an American.

That's HIS opinion.

The United States of America are 50 states along with some territories that are united to make a nation.

A nation is a relatively large group of people organized under a single, usually independent government. And that is what makes America a country.

America isn't technically a country. Most people refer to the United States of America as 'America', which may offend some but works for me.

With regards to your original question (the weather), its cold and snowy in Upstate NY this time of year. ;-)

The name of the country is The United States of America, but it's okay to shorten it to "America."
Similarly, the name of our neighbor to the south is "The United States of Mexico" but no one calls it that outside of Mexico.
