The usage that impacted most on everyday life is to use glass in windows, thereby allowing sunlight in without the full force of the winter wind!

Obviously there are numerous other more specialised uses, one in particular is chemistry because glass is clean, see-through, strong (enough), may be formed into intricate shapes, and is resistant to the vast majority of chemicals.

It's made from sand. It blocks draughts whilst also allowing us to see out of buildings. I don't want to go back to the days when buildings were fully brick/stone except for some arrow slits to see through.

Also glass is a material which can be crafted for stuff in opticals. To let people who can't see well with their own eyesight to have improved vision. It also was needed for telescopes which heralded in a new dimension of science. Glass is also a nice material from which to hold liquid refreshement and drink from.

Good old glass.
