The proper way is to burn it.....unless you listen to talk radio pundits....then you carefully sew it into a cloak and hide behind it while lying and calling all others names and hope that no one will strike you back behind your flag.

With a dignified ceremony usually performed by fire department personnel or either Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts. During the ceremony the flag is burned beyond recognition. It is a beautiful and heart tugging ceremony everyone should witness.

I have heard that private citizens should not burn their own flags. I'm not sure if that's true, but I do know active military bases, Veterans' Groups and chapters of the Boy Scouts of America will retire flags. In some municipalities you can also give them to your local police and fire stations.

It should be burned. It is permissable to repair a torn flag if you wish to do so. See below for the VFW's flag disposal/burning procedures.

That's a good question. I was wondering the same thing myself. My flag ripped in the tornadoes that came through here in Georgia. The Veterans Association looks like the way to to go, from the answers given here.
Thanks for posting!

It is called 'retiring the flag'. You burn it with respect, possibly with ceremony. If you give it to a Scouting group they will put in enough ceremony to satisfy anyone.

You are actually suppose to burn it. I have a party every spring when i burn my and neighbors christmas trees. If anyone has a flag to retire, I throgh it in.
The American Legion or the VFW can do this for you as well.

Deliver it to your local Veterans of Foreign Wars or Elks Lodge. Please, don't burn it yourself. That has been used by some people as an irreverant sign of disrespect and it would be sad if you don't have similar sentiments.
