The term Native American and the term American Indian was forced onto Native people by the U.S. government. Native people to this day still have not had the right to self-determine what they should be called. Indigenous, Native, or Tribal names are more culturally sensitve and correct. It is not a matter of political correctness but of cultural understanding.

If you don't like these terms talk to the U.S. government. Tell them to give Native people their rights to self-determination.

I would say there might be a similar argument for African Americans but I do not want to speak for them, then I would be taking away rights to self-determination, see what I mean.

I am a Native woman. As a Cherokee man I think you would have more pride in your heritage and understand this struggle...

You have spoke the truth, and some may call you a "racist". Well said. To try to answer you question,a White man born in Africa is White, nothing more or less. A native Indian is a native because they are indigenous to that land. A black man,Chinese or a Pakistani born in America is what they are. These people will insist they are American to claim all the benefits that come along with being American, but they ALL will call themselves "Black,Chinese and Pakistani".

The native people were incorrectly labeled Indians because Columbus thought he was in the Country of India. The name Indians stuck for some obscure reason.
But in reality the people that inhabited this land when Columbus came are indeed native Americans . It would be interesting to know how they referred to themselves - was it Cherokee, Apache, etc.

I agree with you totally. Any one born in this country is a native American. We need to drop the hyphenated words and start calling anyone who is a citizen as an American. Off course the leftist morons will object in that they have a vested political interest in keeping their base thinking they are some persecuted minority in this country.

Here's a good sollution:
Those who are citizens: Americans
Those who are legally here: Resident Aliens
Those who are illegally here: Illegal Alien
Those just visiting: Tourist

Note the lack of hyphenation or addition of anything else on the American. That is because that's all you are. Your color isn't special. Your heritage doesn't grant you super powers. You are already one of the most powerful and wealthy people on the planet: an American.

He has extra authentic to call himself an African American than a black guy who replaced into born in Detroit. Even an Egyptian who lives interior the u . s . a . is an African American. no longer all of us who replaced into born on the continent of Africa has black skin. The actress Charlize Theron is African.
