what is the difference between hip hop and rap?

hip hop is more cultural and is more positive and informative. It has nothing to do with beats or how fast you rap. Nas, Dead Prez, Common, Talib Kweli, are all hip hop. Rap is not really about anything in general, it's just whatever you want to say or talk about. It has no cultural undertones and it's mostly about money for the rappers. i dont think there is much of a difference. but personally i see hip hop as more tame lyrics and softer type beats and rap is more hard beats with hard lyrics.
