I have heard alot about this. He apparently issued $5B worth of this currency as an alternative to the Fed Reserve notes. After his death the currency was removed from circulation. Where can I find reliable info on this matter?

The only circulating banknotes other than Federal Reserve notes during that time frame are called United States Notes.
They have a red treasury seal instead of the green one on Federal Reserve Notes.
Actually, these notes were still being issued well after JFK's death. There were Series 1963 $2 and $5 US Notes and Series 1966 $100 notes. If you do a search on eBay, you will find plenty of them for sale.
