Make up a babysitting flyer and go door to door of neighbors you know have younger kids. You can also hang one up at the grocery store if having to drive to a house to babysit is no problem. But the best source is word of mouth!

Be dependable. Get parents you've babysat for to write references for you. Print out from your computer a beautiful flyer to post anywhere in town you can. Have competitive rates. Be good with the kids. Be available when needed. You'll then be the most popular babysitter in your area. Once parents get word how wonderful you are. It's a job like any other and you have to take it seriously. You are after all taking care of someone else's pride and joy. Mom to 3 here.

Usually there a community courses available you can take to become a certified babysitter. Once you're certified (not a that you have to be but it sure does make it a little easier to get a job) you can make up flyers and hang them in grocery stores, laundry mats, and other business establishments to get the word out.

Check with local daycare centers. They may have a bulletin board that you can put a flier on. Also check with organizations like the American Red Cross. They offer baby sitter training in my city. This will be a plus for you. They may also have a list of parents needing a baby sitter.

Everybody else had good suggestions - just wanted to add one. Check out craiglist.org. They have a category for child care where you can post your availability or even look for jobs. Good luck!
