Depends on the laws in place in the country in question. In some countries, you don't own anything below the soil

You own your house after you pay the mortgage. If you completely own a property on the surface, then you own everything that is three feet under it, that is if you agree to a regular contract. Theres some special situations where people can own land that is much farther down.

It all depends on your local ordinances. Mining or water rights may depend on what the local or state gov't decrees.

Here is Australia, you only "own" 3 inches down, so if you found buried treasure on your property, or under your house., John Howard figures that it belongs to him.

It happens all the time - someone makes a big gold find, and they lie so they don't lose it to the government.

Very star worthy question. Will have to ask my husband he is full of useless knowledge.

I asked him and he said he actually knew. He says imagine and upside down pyramid. The depth you own is triangulated to the center of the earth.

I swear he never ceases to amaze me!
