Seems like there are things I didn't even consider: insurance cards, passport, driver's license, my job. So much! Am I forgetting anything major? Does it take a long time for the Social Security card and passport? I'm clueless here...

Once you get the paper after the wedding the SS card only took one visit. If you get everything done right away it shouldnt take long at all everything should be changed within a week or 2. the only thing i dont know about is the passport because I do not have one so I didnt have to get it switched. good luck and congrats on getting married!

Social Security office is your first stop. You'll wait in a long line, take your old card, license, and marriage license. They'll do the paper work and you'll get your new card in a week or so in the mail. Next is the license, you can just go to you local DPS with the same cards and they'll do the same. From then on, your bank, employer etc. It seems like a hassle at first but it's not that bad, just don't put it off. You'll also need to change your billing info with utilities, credit cards, any college or university you attended to update their records, and your vehicle registration/insurance. You may need to make copies of your updated license/s.s. card for the bank, employer and possibly insurance companies.

credit cards & job you may be able to change right before the wedding, without the marriage certificate. the others you will have to wait until the marriage certificate comes back from the court clerks office. after that it varies. the passport will probably take the longest - up to 8 weeks. drivers license & social security card - about 2 weeks. the insurance - you should be able to show them the certificate & they change it on the spot.

My wife was able to handle most of it in one day. Your local courthouse can handle the SSN card and issue a temp replacement that day until the new one arrives. Driver's license is simple though you do have to pay for a new one. We simply notified the insurance company of the change and they handled the paperwork. Passport may be longer. I am not sure. You will need several certified copies of your marriage license which are available at the courthouse for a nominal fee.

once you get started about two-three weeks. you don't have to do them all at once. the SS yes before you file, the DL, anytime within a month or so, for the insurance co. call them asap that may change your status. and when you go to the bank just bring the marriage lic with you. they can change it right then and there. but for the SS, go online and see what doc's you need and take them to the local SS office they'll order you a new one and send it to your home. its really nothing but a small pain in the a... the wait in the SS office and the wait in the dmv is anyway

It's very easy. Go to the local social security office with your proof of name change (from the courts and it has to be marked by a notary for it to be valid) i got my social security card in 2 weeks. The passport is just you submitting a new form to get a new one. http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html

you just need that form from the court house saying it's been changed that's where it all starts that's all the proof you need to change it.

it depends on how long it takes to get the marriage licence in.. i think it was a couple weeks, then when you change your social sec. card they will give you a temp paper showing that you got it changed and you can take that to your bank, job.. or whatnot

As long as it takes you to do it, there is no answer to this question.

As for the second question, watch your mail, see everything that has your maiden name, notify them of you new name. a passport take the same time it normally would to process, four to six weeks.
