The other day, while on shift duty on my local fire department, we recieved a medical call. After responding I realized I would be approx. 15-20 mins late for my full-time job. After calling my supervisor he stated I would be wrote up for this. Does anyone know where I can find information regarding this issue? Are there any laws protecting a firefighter against this kind of action from another employer? Any help is MUCH appreciated in this matter. Thanks in advance!

Michigan is an at will employment state meaning an employer can let you go for no reason. You also have the right to quit and give no reason. They only thing that can supersede this law is a signed Union contract. That being said I see no provision for a firefighter to get special privilege. Best thing to do is try to work something out with your boss if possible that you can stay over or work extra to try make up for the lost time. Hey he holds all the marbles. Thank Mr. Engler for this, it is part of his legacy.

I don't think Michigan is likely to be any different from NY where I have been a volunteer firefighter for over 15 years.

It is not likely that there are any laws protecting you from being late for your job while you are protecting you community.

Bottom line: If your boss is that big of jerk and isn't willing to cut a bit of slack once in a while for those that put their lives on the line for free, to protect him, his business, his family and his neighbors, then maybe you need to work for less of an ungrateful horse's a**.

My boss never gave it second thought on the rare ocaissions I called in that I was going to be late after fighting a "worker', etc. all night.

Good luck

I don't know what you're full time job is but it sounds like your boss is a prick. You should consider a different profession for your full-time job where your heroism is actually appreciated.

As you sign you're write up ask you're boss how he'd feel if you walked away from saving his life because you were late for you're other job.

I really don't know under your state but in Texas & my county "NO" . They actually encouraged participation in civic duty because it looked good for them.
