What percentage of the earnings of a movie is normally given to the screenwriter?

I think it's very much negotiated between the writer and the producers. In most cases, I think the screenwriter gets only a fixed sum for the script (like those unsolicited scripts you always hear about) with some residual rights. Big names might get a fixed percentage (like .5% of gross receipts).
