I work with some shady people, nothing illegal though, so I use a false name to get paid. Since the checks are mine and belong to my false name, can I sign them over to my real self and then deposit them in my checking account? Any legal barbs to this? I realise if the check goes back to the employer they would see my real name anyway but thats just one person and not an issue.

Most banks will not allow you to sign over the check. It's called a third party check. The check is written from one party, the check writer, to the second party, your fake identiy, to the third party, you.

This causes additional risk for the bank. This is the reason most banks will not accept these 3rd party checks. If they do, they want both the 2nd and 3rd parties to be there to verify your identity. Obviously you do not have ID for both you and your fake identity which will most likely cause the bank to place a potential deposit fraud or suspicious activity alert on your account.

Best thing, don't use a fake identity. It's going to cause more trouble then it's worth. If you're working in a 'shady' business. Then maybe it's time to look for a career change.

Obtaining funds under a fake identity is fraud.

If you were working for someone that was legit, they would have asked for a copy of your valid drivers license and your S.S. card up front after you were hired. This is to fill out whats called an I-9 which is required for every employee.

If you are being paid under a "fake" identity, it is illegal.
Are you filing income tax under that fake identity as well.

Also, dont you think the employer will notice the same handwriting for both names?

Can you not just set up an online bank account and then do transfers between accounts that way?
