If there is a web page on start up there is a definite problem. This shouldn't happen until you are booted up and online. Maybe you mean desktop?

If you have XP, it is normal for the screen to go black for a few seconds while the system is booting up.

your video card could be loose, faulty video cable, bad video drivers, bad monitor, or a dozen other things. Start with the simplest thing, and test everything tell you find the problem.

A faulty monitor, perhaps? Is it an old CRT? Have you tried with another monitor? What is it like in Knoppix?
