I'd love to study at CalArts, but I'm not good enough, could someone give me some advice on how to improve enough to get accepted?

Try taking some art courses at your local junior college or look for classes offered in adult education.

These are less expensive than art specialty schools; you will get formal training in art techniques to improve your skills.

I agree with Calina, go to your local junior college and that will really really help. Until you can do that, I would suggest going to your local library and pick up some good books on drawing techniques. And yes, practice practice. You need to eat think and sleep art. It has to really get into your spirit. Don't ever hold back or get nervous or cheat yourself out of the time to study and practice. That's what you're going to be doing in school. Art needs to be a priority in your life. That's the best advice I can come up with. I went back to school at 43 in Riverside CA. Now I'm a professional artist here in Fairhope Al. A great art community. Oh I almost forgot, surround yourself with other artists. Do master studies of other artists as practice. Being an artist doesn't come easy and there are a lot of sacrafices to make. I wish you all the success in the art world. Study the old masters. They're incredible. 1600's on!!!!!

Hi Marissa,
I would say that one of the best ways to improve, and this might be too obvious, is to practice. Another good way is to work with a group of developing artists in some kind of structured setting. I'm thinking of either a class at a community art center, or with one of the online groups. Some online groups are lead by a teacher and you have to pay to be part of the class. Others, like the numerous drawing groups on Flickr (www.flickr.com) are peer-based, and you all work on the same drawing challenge (or whatever else you want to display and get feedback on). Some people post things everyday, and can get feedback every day. Also, just observing other people's work can be a big help (the online groups are again good for that, plus visits to your local art museum, or studying art books). I would like to invite you to join the Everyday Matters group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/everydaymatters/ and the Flickr group for the same: http://www.flickr.com/groups/edm/
Hope this has been a help.
Good luck!
Kay

I would say practice alot. Also maybe start looking up and purchasing books of your favorite artist. Learn from those books. Copy them if you like. Again, practice alot. I get a Molskin sketchbook to carry with me everywhere so when I have free time I sketch all the time. from people to buildings.

Well, mostly i would refer to art lessons, but if you cant pay for those, just try to sketch. that mostly helped me. or try to copie something off a sheet of paper.
